Why is it called the Friends of Ruby?
Back in the day, many LGBTQIA+ folks referred to one another as “friends of Dorothy,” coded language that only other community members could understand.
Although its origins are contentious, the phrase is believed to come from The Wizard of Oz series. There are a lot of references to queerness in the books. In fact, in 1906’s Road to Oz, Polychrome, the rainbow’s daughter, responds to a critique about the friend group with “The queerness doesn’t matter, so long as they’re friends!”
Friends of Ruby is All She Wrote Books’ version of this idea. No matter who you are or how you identify, you’re welcome to become a member.
Why does All She Wrote Books have a membership program?
Queer/feminist bookstores are a special kind of business. The experience you get at All She Wrote is not the same as what you’ll get at other indies in the area or a big box store. We sell books, of course, but we also serve as a neighborhood resource, public gathering space, and connect diverse communities with one another.
